380,OOO screened in Op Cantas

A TOTAL of 380,343 people have been screened nationwide under   Op Cantas Khas, said Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

He said those detained comprised 178,217 Malays, 77,104 Chinese, 73,505 Indians and 51,517 others.

"Of the total, police detained 14,511 members of secret societies and gangsters," he said after a security briefing with community leaders here yesterday.

Present were Malacca Chief Minister Datuk Idris Haron and Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim.

Zahid said Selangor recorded the highest number of arrests at 6,191, followed by Johor (2,682) and Kuala Lumpur (1,185).

For Malacca, Zahid said 2,600 individuals were screened, and those involved in crime would be charged.

He said he was satisfied with the action of the state police in eradicating crime to ensure Malacca, which was noted for its tourism, was safe.

In the meantime, he said, the police were waiting for the Crime Prevention Act to be enforced. Bernama
