Not Enough Rain Hitting Catchment Areas, Says Selangor Official

KUALA LUMPUR, March 5 The recent downpour has not been in the catchment areas as reserves in dams continue to deplete further.

Selangor Water Management Board (Luas) director Mohd Khairi Selamat said despite the heavy rain in several areas over the past two days, the rainfall was not enough to fill up the dams.

“Even if there is one hour of rain daily, it would take about nine months to fill up the dams,” said Khairi.

Based on the trend in previous years, rainfall between the end of September to December would only fill the dams up to 80 per cent, he said.

Reserves at the Klang Gates dam were at 53.26 per cent while the reading at the Langat dam was 70.95 per cent. The Batu dam had 91.17 per cent of reserves while Tasik Subang had 94.91 per cent.

Selangor executive councillor Elizabeth Wong said Selangor could possibly implement the third phase of water rationing if the water reserves at the Klang Gates fell below 50 per cent.

Khairi echoed Wong’s statement.

“However, there are no plans to implement phase three at this moment.

“For now we are limiting the release of water from the dam to the treatment plant to 100mld (millilitres per day). Through this method, we will prolong the life cycle of the water to control the situation,” he said. The Malay Mail
