GEORGE TOWN April 27. Penang DAP has shortlisted five persons to contest in the coming Bukit Gelugor by-election.
State chairman Chow Kon Yeow said the list will be submitted to the party Central Executive Committee (CEC) which will convene tomorrow. He said the CEC will discuss issues relating to the by-election and candidature.
"There are no elected representatives in the list," he said in a press conference today and declined to say if the list contained Karpal Singh's family members.
The by-election was triggered following the demise of incumbent Karpal Singh in an accident on April 17.
He won the Chinese majority seat in 2004 and defended his parliamentarian status in 2008 and 2013 with increased majorities.
Speculation is rife that Karpal's son, Ramkarpal, has been tapped to contest the constituency.
If he contests and wins, he joins brothers Penang Housing Committee chairman Jagdeep and Puchong MP Gobind in active politics.
The Election Commission (EC) has fixed May 12 for nomination and May 25 for polling.
Chow, who is also Penang Local Government Committee chairman, earlier opened the Earth Day 2014 barter trade event in Lebuh Pantai here.
Twenty-five people had registered to participate in the event which sees people exchanging goods for things they want. The Sun Daily
