MCA Stands Firm Against Implementation Of Hudud Law

KOTA BARU April 25. MCA will not budge from its stance against the Kelantan government's intention to implement Hudud law in the state due to grave concerns it will jeopardise Malaysia's harmony and unity.

MCA president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said the party respected Islam as the official religion and likewise expected the PAS led Kelantan government to be sensitive towards the country's multi-racial communities.

"MCA stands firm in its rejection of this proposal and hope PAS retracts it. And if they don't we hope DAP, as one of its coalition partners, can advise them to do so," he told reporters after opening the new Kelantan MCA state office, here today.

Liow said the aim of PAS to implement Hudud law was in conflict with the constitutional spirit of the nation and they were better off focusing on creating a 'Welfare State" as promised in their party manifesto during the last general election.

The Kelantan PAS government was earlier reported as planning to table a private Bill on Hudud law at the Dewan Rakyat to enforce the Syariah Criminal Code (II) Enactment 1993.

The Syariah Criminal Code (II) Enactment 1993, Technical Committee chairman Datuk Mohd Amar Nik Abdullah, who is also Kelantan deputy Menteri Besar, was also reported as saying that the Bill has been drafted and only needed a few adjustments and opinions from legal experts. Bernama
