Town Hit By Freak Thunderstorm

ALOR SETAR: A freak thunderstorm has left a trail of destruction in its wake after more than 50 houses and flats units in Langgar suffered damages to their properties.

The houses in Kampung Telaga Bata were particularly worse off where one of the houses had almost its entire second floor blew off by a strong gust of wind.

House owner Mohd Sabri Dun, 48, who runs his own business, said he was at the mosque when the incident happened around 4.15pm on Monday.

"I suddenly received a call from my wife who was alone at the house that the wind had blew off the second floor of our house," said Sabri when met at his house.

The father of five said he only realised the extend of the damage when the rain stop and he saw that his roof and some parts of the house landed 50m away from the property.

"Just only less than a year ago I had repaired and renovated the top floor of my house and now it is gone."

Fortunately, nobody was hurt during incident.

"My children were at school and they would usually do their studies on the second floor at night so thank goodness, nobody was on the second floor."

Sabri estimates his lost to be about more than RM30,000 and he hopes that the government provide his family with some help. 

Pokok Sena Umno division chief Syed Ali Syed Rastam said he would request for Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir for disaster relief funds to aid the affected families. The Star
