PJ ROADS NIGHTMARE, ONE WAY LOOP STARTS TODAY

The new one-way traffic loop system in Petaling Jaya which came into effect yesterday left many confused and frustrated.

Locals said the implementation of the three-month trial system which saw Jalan Utara, Jalan Timur, Jalan Barat and Jalan Sultan being turned into one-way traffic was poorly planned.

Communications consultant Karen Johnson said she was shocked to see traffic come to a standstill in Section 52 as early as 7am.

“It was a big mess. All roads were closed and there were no signages erected to indicate the exit and entry points.

“I had to make a huge turn just to get into Section 52 as most roads leading to the area were closed,” said the 41-year-old.

To make matters worse, Karen said the Nutrilite Colour Fun Run was also held at the affected areas yesterday.

“I saw motorists making illegal U-turns at junctions because many were confused with the road system.”

Car dealer Mohd Yaakob Mohd Sharif, 49, said the new system was unnecessary.

“The original road system was more organised and traffic flow was not a problem,” he said.

“It is a waste of time to be stuck in traffic on a Sunday and there is going to be a bigger headache when people return to work.”

Contractor V. Lohes, 40, felt the City Council did not think their plans through before implementing the new system.

“If it is poorly organised during trial period, I can only imagine how bad it would be when it is fully implemented.”

Lohes said the council should have done the implementation in stages instead of closing up roads at one go.

While several traffic enforcement officers from the council were spotted diverting traffic along Jalan Timur heading towards Jalan Changgai, observations revealed barricades placed at several roads to prevent vehicles from entering certain roads were removed by motorists.

During the trial period, vehicles from Shah Alam and Klang will enter Jalan Timur and head towards Jalan Sultan and Jalan Barat before exiting to the Federal Highway. KL-bound motorists will enter Petaling Jaya via Jalan Utara and exit at Jalan Timur.

City Council deputy mayor Puasa Md Taib admitted the council faced several hiccups during the trial implementation of the one-way loop system.
