Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng has raised questions over the authenticity of the letter sent by the Home Minister to the United States Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI), pertaining to gambling kingpin Paul Phua Wei Seng’s case.
Lim took a swipe at the standard of language used in the letter, which he described as “atrocious and secondary school level”, if indeed it was issued by the Ministry.
“We have some doubts over the veracity of the letter, but this has been widely distributed, so we hope that the Home Ministry can come out and clarify whether it’s genuine or not.
“If it comes from the ministry, it is not the standard expected of the government of Malaysia to the United States government. We expect a better standard than this,” Lim told a press conference today.He also expressed concern over the alleged involvement of Home Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi with a gambling kingpin.
“Is this how our ministers operate? Is this the type of company our ministers mix around with — and he (Ahmad Zahid) is supposed to be a candidate for deputy Prime Minister?
He said the matter affects not only the integrity but also the image of the government.
“I hope that Ahmad Zahid will come out to clarify. I do not want to cast any aspersions yet,” Lim said.
Ahmad Zahid was reported to have sent a letter to FBI deputy director Mark F. Giuliano clarifying that Phua, who was arrested in Las Vegas in July, was neither a member nor associated with the 14K triad in Malaysia.
