UMNO vice-president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi Zahid Hamidi has described the issue of Kedah UMNO and Menteri Besar Mukhriz Mahathir’s support of Najib Razak as a personal matter that did not involve the state UMNO liasion body as a whole.
Urging that the issue be resolved immediately, Ahmad Zahid, who is also Home Minister, said what happened was not a problem and not the stand of the state UMNO.
“It is only the personal stand of a leader. I do not think we should mix a person’s problems with an organisation’s. In my opinion, we do not have a choice but to resolve this problem if we want to see our party and government given continuity by the people in general,” he told reporters after holding a meeting with the Penang state UMNO liaison body here yesterday.
Bukit Lada state assemblyman Ahmad Lebai Sudin recently issued a statement calling Mukhriz to resign as Menteri Besar if he failed to express his support for Najib.
The issue arose after former prime minister Mahathir Mohamad, who is also Muhkriz’s father, hurled criticisms on Najib’s leadership.
Ahmad Zahid said in any era, a leader needs support and undivided loyalty. He added that party members must work together to resolve issues which arose in order to gain the confidence and trust of the people for the government.
“The people have their hopes in an organisation and political party which can solve these problems … especially an organisation which has been given the mandate to form the government,” he said.
