Students and youths are advised against easily believing reports from social media because not all are true.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said said as an educated group, they should think rationally and seek correct and accurate information.
"Not all reports in the social media are correct, some are false, some are slanderous and some are half truths, and in the borderless world this (the spread of information in the social media) is the most challenging.
"If in the past we depended on newspapers, today the new generations no longer read newspapers," he said in his speech during a meeting with Malaysian Students in Indonesia, here, Thursday night.
Najib said, after obtaining information from social media on issues, they should evaluate rationally to determine if the information was true or slanderous.
He also announced a special aid to the Malaysian Student Fund in Indonesia which was set up by the Association of Malaysian Students In Indonesia (PKPMI).
Najib said, as Prime Minister, he endeavoured to do his best for the nation and the effort currently being undertaken is to develop the national economy from a moderate to an advanced economy.
The government would soon launch the 11th Malaysia Plan which was the final phase before Malaysia became a developed nation by 2020.
Najib said entrepreneurs and renowned companies in Malaysia should also spread their wings to Indonesia to become champions in the ASEAN region.
"With the large market and 230 million population in Indonesia, Malaysian entreprenuers must take the opportunity to expand their businesses in this country," he said.
He said the Malaysia-Indonesia relations must also be expanded and not limited to ties between leaders only.
"We want the ties between Malaysia and Indonesia to be expanded at all levels including at the parliamentary levels of both countries," he said.
A total 200 Malaysian students from all over Indonesia attended the gathering and dinner which was also attended by Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, Communication and Multimedia Minister Datuk Seri Shabery Cheek and Malaysian ambassador to Indonesia Datuk Seri Zahrain Mohamad Hashim.
