OFFICIAL VISIT GENERAL CHANG WANQUAN, STATE COUNCILOR AND THE MINISTER OF NATIONAL DEFENSE OF THE PEOPLE’S REBUBLIC OF CHINA

This morning, I received General Chang Wanquan, State Councillor and the Minister of National Defence of China at the Ministry of Defence in Kuala Lumpur.

In the bilateral meeting, we discussed a broad spectrum of issues of strategic importance to both our countries as well as current and emerging trends in the ever changing global security landscape.

We also discussed matters of operational interests especially with regards to the significant developments in military to military cooperation. We acknowledged the successful conduct of our first joint military exercise, “Peace and Friendship” between the Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF) and the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) in September 2015. Malaysia and China believe that such efforts should be enhanced in the future as it goes a long way in building trust between both nations' defence forces.

Overall, the bilateral meeting reaffirms the strong ties between the two nations in the area of defence. It is our great hope that these strong ties, built on equal partnership and mutual trust, will lead to mutual benefits for both our nations especially in terms of maintaining regional peace and stability.

Separately, I have also extended the invitation to General Chan to attend the biennial Defence Services Asia Exhibition and Conference 2016 (DSA 2016) which will be held from 18 to 21 April 2016 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
